An Overview of Display Device Types - CompTIA A+ 220-801: 1.10

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

  • Size
    • i.e., 15", 19" , 21"
  • Resolution
    •  XGA/1024x768
    • SXGA/1280x1024
    • UXGA/1600x1200
  • Refresh rate (hertz/Hz)
    • Higher is better on the eyes
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
LED and OLED
  • Backlight is LEDs instead of florescent
    • An LED- backlit LCD display
  • LED's around the edge of the screen
    • Diffused to evenly light the display
  • An array of LED's behind the screen
    • May be dimmed individually
  • Organic Light Emitting Diode
    • Organic compound emits light when receiving an electric current
    • Low cost, power efficient, wider viewing angle, fast response time
 Plasma display
  • A display of tiny cells
    • Noble gas and mercury
  • Voltage forms a plasma
    • Mercury sheds energy as UV light
  • UV light strikes colored phosphor
    • And you see a baseball game
  • Deep blacks, fast response time
    • Very good color representation
  • Shimmering, high power
    • Doesn't work well at high altitudes, lots of radio interference
Digital projectors
  • Not always "LCD"
  • Very bright (very hot) light
